The 2018 Western Conference Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets went all the way to a game seven. The game was a back-and-forth affair until the end, when the Warriors pulled away late to take the series 4-3 with a 101-92 victory at Oracle Arena. Stephen Curry led the way with 27 points, ten rebounds, and nine assists, while Klay Thompson chipped in 24 points and Draymond Green added a triple double. James Harden was outstanding for the Rockets, finishing with 32 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Ultimately though, the Warriors were too much in the end and advanced to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive year.
The Warriors had a definite game plan going into game seven: slow the tempo, play some zone defense, and force the Rockets to settle for contested jumpers. With Stephen Curry patrolling the perimeter and Draymond Green locking down the paint, the Warriors did an excellent job of limiting the Rockets' offensive production. They also maintained their high level of intensity on the defensive end throughout the game, denying the Rockets easy looks and getting out in transition whenever possible.
The Rockets had a good strategy, but in the end it didn't pay off. With James Harden leading the way, they attempted to get out in transition and attack in the open court. They also attempted to spread the floor and use pick-and-rolls to create open shots. Unfortunately, they were unable to consistently break down the Warriors' defense and were forced to settle for tough, contested jumpers.
The biggest difference between the two teams in this game was the Warriors' clutch shooting. In the fourth quarter, they hit several big threes in a row to extend their lead, while the Rockets were unable to respond. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were especially clutch in the fourth quarter, combining to shoot 5-for-7 from three-point range.
The Warriors proved to be the better team in the end, winning the series and advancing to their fourth consecutive NBA Finals appearance. Despite the Rockets' best efforts, their strategy wasn't able to contain the Warriors' offensive firepower, and their clutch shooting was unable to keep them in the game. This series was a nail-biter until the end, but the Warriors ultimately earned the hard-fought victory.
